Collectors Guide to Roseville Pottery Rozane Azurean, 1903-1904

What is Rozane Azurean?
Rozane Azurean is a line of art pottery produced in 1903-1904 by the Roseville Pottery Company in Zanesville, Ohio.

Who designed Azurean?
The Azurean line was designed by John Herold.

Even as Roseville Pottery was the last major company to enter the market for brown decorated ware with their initial Rozane offering of 1900, they also were nearly a decade late to the game with the production of their Rozane Azurean line in 1903. Rookwood pottery had already marketed and then abandoned their blue and white decorated Ariel Blue line in 1894 and 1895. Weller pottery had also produced a similar line with their Blue Louwelsa, also prior to 1900. Nevertheless, Roseville felt that their Azurean line would be marketable.

Just as the other pottery companies before them, they looked to already existing shapes as canvases for their blue and white artwork. Roseville had already produced somewhere in the range of 150 shapes for the original brown-decorated Rozane line, and selected several dozens of them for use in the Azurean line. The catalog pages show 31 different shapes to receive the Azurean glaze and decoration, but examples of Azurean on other shapes are plentiful. For this reason, no comprehensive list of shapes can ever be completed. The lowest known shape number is 811, and the highest is 959.

The Azurean pieces are almost always marked as both Rozane and Azurean, with the shape number stamped in the base. Additionally, the clay is not the typical golden Ohio clay so often associated with Roseville Pottery, but rather a bright porcelain white.

The artists worked with a wide range of subject matter as did the other potteries before them. Although the vast majority were floral, there were some landscapes and portraits, as well as some animals such as cats and dogs.

When was Azurean made?
The Azurean line was only produced in 1903-1904.
